Just say no, Dan thought a couple of days later as he sat in his office with his phone in his hand.

He could tell his brother he had other plans for tomorrow night, which was the truth: he was planning to surprise Trisha with tickets to the Broadway production of Frozen, because she’d confessed that after watching the movie a number of times with her little nieces, she’d discovered that she really loved it. And Tom would understand, he was sure, because Tom was nothing like Mark.

Well… not a lot like him, anyway.

Mark had never been interested in listening to an “I can’t,” whether there was a good reason behind it or not. More times than Dan could count, Mark had steamrolled right over the plans his brothers had made in favor of hitting the club circuit yet again, so they could attract the excited crowd of fans, paparazzi, and looky-loos that fed his need to be King of the World.

Gonna be a full-court press, bro! he always crowed. Baby, we are gonna ROCK THIS TOWN TO-NIGHT!

Mark—thanks to all that partying—was in rehab now, and for a while after he was admitted there, Dan had assumed that all those crazy nights of club-hopping had come to an end. But the oldest Damon brother had created a sensation that, even without him, was still going strong. Tom’s girlfriend Allison was writing that behind-the-scenes book, and there were still plenty of people anxious to generate some publicity for a new club, or add a bunch of followers to their Instagram accounts, or simply get close to the most talked-about guys in town, even if they were troublemakers.

The invitations kept coming. And coming. And coming.

“This place is… where?” Dan asked Tom with a sigh.

“Brooklyn,” Tom said. “It actually sounds kind of interesting. The club, I mean. It was an old factory of some kind.”

“You really want to go.”

“It sounds interesting,” Tom said again. “I looked up some pictures online. I’d kind of like to see it. And Allison’s game.” Before Dan could respond, he went on, “The menu looks good too.”

He wasn’t pushing, not like Mark would have. He wasn’t relentless, a force of nature you couldn’t resist.

Even when the three of them were kids, Mark had had a knack for convincing people to do things they were almost sure they wanted no part of; if wooing and cajoling didn’t work, he’d resort to subtle threats. He was a total adrenaline junkie, Dan had decided a long time ago, and what had happened with Julie Pearson had only pushed him up to the next level.

Just blowing off some steam, Dan thought. Drinking. Dancing. Having some laughs.

How many times in the past few years had they christened somebody’s new brand-new club? Dozens?

It felt like hundreds.

Thinking about it now made Dan’s head ache.
